Life in the UK Test Terms and Conditions

Booking a Test
You will be asked to read these Terms before booking a test. If you choose to proceed the test centre will take your name and telephone number. This information, plus the date of test, will be sent to Ufi and kept by the test centre for 6 years for audit and fraud prevention purposes.

When you contact the test centre to book a test, you will have to wait a minimum of 7 days before you take the test. You should receive the offer of a test place within 28 days and should not have to wait longer than 56 days.

If after booking a test you wish to re-arrange the date and time, you may be charged a fee of £10 if you do not give at least 7 days' notice. If you decide you do not wish to proceed, or do not turn up at the date and time of your booking, you will be liable for a cancellation fee of £10.

At Registration
You will be asked to sign a Candidate Attendee list to confirm your attendance and then registered on to the online test system. The following information will be entered about you by the Test Supervisor:

  • Surname
  • Family name
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Country of birth
  • Place of birth
  • Current postcode
  • Method of ID validation
  • ID document serial number
  • Home Office reference number
The Home Office is the Data Controller of any personal data you provide during the course of registering for taking the Test. Ufi processes the data on the Home Office's behalf.

This data will appear on your Result Notification Letter together with the name of the test centre where you are taking your test and the date of the test. You will be given the chance to check that your personal details have been entered correctly. You must do this carefully as after you have been registered, they cannot be changed and these are the details that will be printed on your Result Notification Letter.

This data will be held securely by Ufi and transferred to the Home Office. For information on how the Home Office uses this information and how long it is kept, please contact the Home Office.

Ufi will keep your data for as long as is necessary to fulfil the purposes we collected it for, or as required by law or to enforce or defend legal claims.

The data will not be transferred to any other third parties, unless Ufi is required to do so under law or in connection with legal proceedings.

The data will be used by Ufi in an aggregated manner to provide reports on, for example, pass rates, number of tests taken etc. You cannot be personally identified from this information.

The test centre will keep the signed list of Candidate Attendees for 12 months but does not keep a record of the information collected at registration.

Taking the Test
You will be allowed to take a Practice Test twice if you wish. The result you are given at the end of the Practice Test will not influence the result of your Life in the UK test.

You will be allowed to take notes during the test, but these must be handed over to the Test Supervisor before you leave the test room and they will then be securely destroyed. The test conditions will be explained to you before the test begins and you must abide by them or you will be removed from the test session and will not receive a refund.

If for any technological reason you are unable to complete your test, you have the right to receive a re-sit without having to pay again.

You will be tested on your knowledge of the official Life in the UK Handbook. No appeal will be accepted on the basis of a challenge to the validity of the information contained in the handbook.

Your Test Result
At the end of your test session, you will be issued with a Results Notification Letter. This will inform you if you have been successful or not. Successful candidates will receive a Pass Notification Letter signed and stamped by a Test Supervisor. You accept that it is your responsibility to make sure that:

  • you receive the correct result notification letter;
  • you keep your result notification letter safe.
If for some technological reason your Result Notification letter cannot be printed, Ufi will send this to the test centre where you are taking the test and you accept that you will come to the test centre with one of the approved forms of identification to collect it.

Your Results Notification Letter is an important document. Please keep it safe as no replacement will be issued if you lose or damage it.

Complaints
If you are unhappy with the service, please make your complaint in the first instance to the test centre manager at the Life in the UK Test Centre where your test took place. You should receive a written response within 5 working days. If you are still unhappy after receiving your response, or unwilling to make your complaint to the centre for any particular reason, you may send your complaint in writing to the following address:

Test Operations Manager
Ufi Ltd
Dearing House
1 Young Street
Sheffield S1 4UP

Candidates should NOT come to this address in person as there will be no one here to attend to them. Please allow 5 working days for a response.

Interruptions to service
There may be occasions when the access to the test system is interrupted for emergency maintenance or repairs or to carry out upgrades to improve performance or functionality of the test system. Access may also be interrupted due to failures of telecommunications links and equipment, which are beyond the control of the Supplier.

You accept that you will not have a claim for a breach of contract (either against Ufi or your Life in the UK Test centre) or otherwise in respect of such a period of unavailability. We shall not be liable to you for any of the following types of loss or damage arising out of or in connection with your taking of the Life in the UK test:

  • any loss of profits, loss of earnings, loss of anticipated savings, goodwill or revenue;
  • any loss or corruption of data; or
  • any indirect or consequential loss.

Candidate Misconduct
Any attempt by you to subvert the test process by any of the following actions will be reported to the Home Office and may prejudice your application:

  • taking the test on behalf of another individual
  • making reference to materials (electronic or printed) during the test
  • copying test content (electronically or in test format) and removing it from the test centre
  • intimidating staff with threats and/or violent behaviour to influence your test result
  • offering financial inducements to test centre staff to influence your result
  • using any other method to enlist the help of test centre staff to influence your test result
  • speaking to other candidates during the test
  • looking at other candidates' screens during the test
Where such behaviour is believed to be of a criminal nature, it will be reported to the police. The test centre reserves the right to remove you from your test session and invalidate your test. You accept that if you have acted in one of the above ways you have no right to a refund.

These terms are governed by and shall be construed in accordance with English law. Any dispute arising between you and Ufi (or the test centre) in connection with these terms shall be subjected to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of English courts.
